Deformation Flashcards
Deformation
Change in molecular separation
Elastic potential energy/ Strain energy
Energy is stored in object due to deformation.
Ep=1/2Fx
=1/2kx^2
Limit of proportionality
It is the limit up to which force is directly proportional to extension.
stress∝strain
Stress=E*Strain
Hooke’s law
Within the limit of proportionality, force and extension are directly proportional to each other.
F∝x
F=kx
Spring constant(k)
Force required to extend by unit length.
k=F/x
Elasticity
The property of an object which regains its original shape after deformation when applied force is removed.
Limit of elasticity
Limit up to which object can regain its original shape after deformation.
Plastic deformation
When object is deformed beyond elastic limits, if applied force is removed and object doesn’t regain its original shape. The extension that remains is called plastic deformation.
Series formula for k
K=F/2x
k/2
Parallel formula for k
K=F/x/2
K=2f/x
2k
Stress
Force exerted per unit cross-sectional area
=F/A
Strain
Ratio of extension to original length.
=x/L
Young modulus(E)
Ratio of stress to strain
E=stress/strain
E=FL/Ax
Ultimate tensile stress
It is the maximum stress up to which a material can withstand without breaking.
