rules for behaviour based on moral standards

A
An individual’s behaviour would interfere in their functioning, so they cannot meet the demands of day-to-day life
- the more signs we have, more abnormal we are (signs include experiencing mental distress, irrational behaviour that can be dangerous, observer discomfort)

A
Any behaviour that is different or statistically rare is abnormal

Jahoda identified 8 criteria for ideal mental health:
- no distress/ symptoms
- accurate perception of self
- can self actualise (reach potential)
- cope with stress
- realistic view of world
- good self esteem and lack guilt
- independent
