Epiglottis
Elastic cartilage at the back of the throat which covers the glottis during swallowing
Thyroid cartilage
Cartilage that sits in front of the larynx and above the thyroid gland
Vocal folds
Mucous membrane of the larynx; true vocal cords
Glottis
The opening between the vocal chords and the larynx; vocal folds and slit-like passages between them
Trachea
Windpipe; respiratory tube extending from the larynx to the bronchi
Hyaline cartilage
Cartilage connective tissue containing collagen fibers
Heimlich maneuver
Procedure in which the air in a person’s own lungs is used to expel an obstructing piece of food
Main (primary) bronchi
Airway in the respiratory tract that conducts air into the lungs
Lungs
Organs of the respiratory system responsible for gas exchange with the outside and gas exchange with blood
Mediastinum
The region of the thoracic cavity between the lungs that houses the heart
Apex
Narrow superior portion of each lung
Base
Broad inferior area of each lung resting on the diaphragm
Pulmonary pleura
Visceral serosa or covering on the surface of each lung; visceral pleura
Parietal pleura
Serous membrane layer covering the cavity in which the lung resides (thoracic cavity)
Pleural space
Potential space between the lungs and the thorax wall
