Definitions P1 Flashcards
Maternal Deprivation
When a child suffers from a lack of physical and emotional care, particularly from a mother figure. This can cause neurological and physical defects but also problems with learning and forming attachments in later life.
Reciprocity
A mother or child will replicate the action they have just seen during caregiver-infant interactions. This isn’t at the same time, but after the behaviour has occurred.
Caregiverease
A caregiver may make affectionate, soft voices to the infant which appeals to their understanding and puts the parent on the level of the child.
Interactional Synchrony
Caregiver and infant copy each others actions simultaneously such as both waving at each other during their interaction.
Secure Attachment Type
- Mild stranger anxiety
- Moderate stress when the caregiver leaves them
- Soon comforted by their caregivers return
These children often form good attachments as adults and suffer less social and developmental problems as the other attachment types.
Stimulus
An environmental effect that produces a response within an organism.
- Heat
- Sound
- Voices
- Source of pain
Maturation
The process of a child growing older and experiencing the effects of neurological and physical developments.
Continuity Hypothesis
Theorises that the relationships developed with caregivers and those around a child at a young age are indicative of their later attachments and social wellbeing.
Contact Comfort
When an infant receives physical contact with a caregiver it comforts them and makes them feel better.
