Definitions of mental health Flashcards
Health define
a state of complete physical mental and social welling, and not merely the absence of illness or disease. All aspects are equally important to one’s overall health and devoting more attention to one aspect while neglecting another can lead to illness or disease.
Mental wellbeing
involves the mind and activities such as expressing feelings calmly even when angry sad, rationally thinking about personal problems and issues that arise in everyday life.
Menal health

impairment in the ability to cope with everyday life,
and thoughts, feelings and behaviour that is atypical of the person that is
serious enough to require psychiatric intervention.

typical or conform to a usual or expected standard of
proper and acceptable ways of behaving.
Abnormality

deviant, distressing or dysfunctional (it interferes with the person’s ability to carry out their day to day activities effectively).

thoughts, feelings and behaviour that are acceptable in a particular society or culture but can be considered as unacceptable in another.
Functional approach to determining normal from abnormal
normal behaviour is if the individual can undertake everyday tasks and cope (function) effectively with life in society.

thoughts, feelings and behaviour that are considered as normal/abnormal in a society within a particular era, or period of time.

abnormal behaviour has a biological cause which can be potentially diagnosed and treated.
Statistical approach to determining normal from abnormal
normality follows a normal distribution; thoughts, feelings and behaviour are viewed as normal if fallen into the ‘statistical average’ and considered abnormal if fallen into ‘statistical extremity’ displayed on a bell curve.
