Define and explain failure to function adequately
- someone is unable to cope with ordinary demands of day to day life
- people cannot cope with demands of everyday life
- unable to maintain Hasidic standards eg. Hygiene/ hold down a job

STRENGTH
- attempts to include subjective experience of individual
- acknowledges patient experiences
- useful for assessing abnormality
Evaluate ‘is it simply a deviation from social norms’ for failure to function adequately
WEAKNESS
- it’s hard to differentiate from the two
- eg. No house and a job -=failure to function adequately
- no job and no house= bohemian lifestyle and deviation from social norms
- risk of limiting personal freedom and discrimination

WEAKNESS
- someone has to judge if patient is distressed
- some are judged as not suffering
- psychologists are the only ones that can make this judgement

- typical of individualist cultures
