What is statistical infrequency?

- It is a way to define anything as “normal” or “abnormal” in terms of the number of times it is observed
- Any relatively “usual” behaviour is often seen as “normal” and anything relatively “unusual” is seen as abnormal
- IQ has a normal distribution. The average IQ is 100 and anything below or above that is seen as “abnormal” - under 70 is diagnosed with intellectual disability disorder

What is deviation from social norms?

- When a person behaves in a way that is different from how they are expected to behave they may be defined as abnormal
- There are relatively few behaviours that would be considered universally abnormal therefore definitions are related to cultural context. This includes historical differences from the same society - homesexuality is viewed as abnormal in some culturess but not for others and was considered abnormal in our society in the past

What is an example of deviation from social norms?
A
Antisocial personality disorder where a person fails to conform to rules and laws. They lack empathy and deviate from social norms which is why they are seen as abnormal
