Statistical infrequency
When you are either above or below the mean average within the population
Deviation from social norms
Outside the social laws of the culture
Failure to function adequately
Failing to function doing everyday tasks like going to work, getting out of bed
Deviation from ideal mental health
Jahoda = Self-attitude, personal growth, integration, autonomy, accurate perception of reality, mastery of the environment

E.G. a high IQ,

E.G. difficulty sleeping, everyone needs different amount of sleep so where is the cut off?

Each culture has a different “norm”. Cannot generalise to the population

What was once acceptable may not be socially acceptable now. E.G. Homosexuality.

Does tell us what is desirable and undesirable

It is subjective to who who decides

Ideal mental health is not very common so it would make everyone abnormal
A03: Equates physical and mental health
Tries to apply the principles of physical health to mental health. Mental illness can often be harder to diagnose.
