Health Promotion
activities & preventive measures that promote optimal health. ex: vaccines, exercise programs, nutrition, self exams
Primary Prevention
measures to promote health prior to onset
EX: vaccines, using skin protectant
Secondary Prevention
early identification & treatment
EX: health screenings (skin cancer,HTN, DM)
Tertiary Prevention
Treatment to prevent further sequale
EX: treat CVD, treat DM
Incidence
rate of new cases of the disease; # of new cases in specific time period
Prevelance
actual # of cases alive, w disease either during a period of time or particular date in time
Health-Belief Model (Motivational Model)
Rosenstock-1. ppl have desire to avoid illness
2. specific health acts will prevent or cure illnesses
had NO strategy
Pender’s Health Promotion Model (Nursing Model)
every person has unique experiences that affect subsequent actions, patients seek to regulate own behavior, if self initiated= better results
barriers: unavailability, inconvenience, expense, time
Trans-Theoretical Model
Precontemplation- no intent to change
Contemplation- aware of problem, no commitment to change
Preparation- intent to take action
Action- active behavior modification
Maintenance- sustained change, new behavior replaces old behavior
Termination- no temptation
Relapse- falls into old pattern
Screening
detects early disease or risk factors
Diagnostic Testing
establishes presence or absence of disease
Targeted screening
screening of specific groups of ppl considered at high risk who are asymptomatic
Population Screening
screening to all ppl in target group
EX: age (newborn screenings)

Epidemic
presence of illness/disease @ higher rate than expected based on past history
