Definitions And Terminology Flashcards
Boiling
When a substance changes phase from a liquid to a gas at a fixed temperature. All the particles are involved in boiling.
Evaporation
When a substance changes phase from a liquid to a gas at any temperature. Only the surface particles evaporate.
Boiling point
The temperature at which all the particles in a liquid changes to a gas during heating.
Condensation
When a gas cools down and changes into the liquid phase.
Sublimation
The process during which a substance changes directly from the solid phase into the gas phase.
Pure substance
All the particles in a substance are identical
Impure substance
There are different particles present in a substance.
Mixture
A substance that contains two or more substances that are not chemically combined together.
Filtration
The process used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Residue
The solid collected on the filter paper after filtration
Solution
A homogenous mixture of a solute and a solvent.
Solute
The solid that dissolves in a liquid.
Solvent
The liquid in which a solid dissolves.
Miscible
When two substances are able to mix (dissolve) with one another.
Immiscible
When two substances cannot mix (dissolve)
Crystallization
The process where a dissolved solid is separated from a solution by letting the liquid evaporate.
Distillation
The process where a pure liquid is separated from a solution. The liquid evaporates and condensates and the solid is left behind as the residue.
What is fractional distillation?
The process where mixtures of miscible liquids with different boiling points can be separated.
