definitions and meaning Flashcards
indicator
a chemical that gives a color change in acidic, alkaline and neutral solutions.
Ph meter
electronic device that can give a numerical value for pH, to at least one decimal place, without needing universal indicator.
Acid
a substance that dissolves in water producing hydrogen ions.
Strong acid
A strong acid ionises completely in water like hydrochloric acid.
Weak acid
A weak acid only partially ionises in water like ethanoic acid
Concentrated solution
Concentration only refers to how much of a substance is dissolved in a given volume of water. It does not account for the strength of the acid.
Concentrated acid
contains a large number of acid particles dissolved per unit volume
Dilute acid
contains a small number of acid particles dissolved per unit volume
Bases
A base is a substance that reacts with an acid to produce a salt and a water. Common bases are metal oxides and hydroxides. For example copper oxide and calcium hydroxide.
Alkali
Soluble base for example ammonia and sodium hydroxide
salt
a compound formed when some or all the hydrogen ions of an acid are replaced by metal or ammonium ions
Acids color
all acids are colorless solutions
All group 1 and 11, ammonium, aluminion and zinc compounds
white solids but they dissolve in water to form colourless solutions
copper oxide
black solid
copper carbonate
green solid
hydrated copper sulfate
blue solid
Anhydrous copper sulfate
white solid
copper compounds that are soluble
form blue solutions
Endothermic
a reaction in which heat energy is taken in
exothermic
a reaction in which heat energy is given out
Neutralization
the reaction between an acid and an alkali producing a salt and water
water of crystallization
water that is chemically bonded into the crystal structure
Hydrated
contains water of crystallization
