Definitions and mapping Flashcards
1
Q
What is a telomere?
A
Repeated sequence at ends of chromosomes
2
Q
What are polytene chromosomes?
A
Oversized chromosomes developed from normal ones
In drosophila salivary glands
3
Q
What are the three methods of mapping chromosomes?
A
- Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation
- Somatic cell hybridisation
- Genome wide association study
4
Q
What is FISH?
A
Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation
- Use structure of protein to work out gene
- Complementary fluorescent dna probe used to identify location
5
Q
What is a GWAS? Give an example
A
Genome wide association study
- Many different genomes to work out which genes do what
- Tests if any particular traits are associated with a particular genetic variant
International Hapmap Project- to develop a haplotype map of the human genome to describe patterns of genetic variation such as skin colour.
