definitions 6 Flashcards
What is hysteresis?
A material that displays different loading and unloading characteristics with the strain energy being lost as heat
What is ceramic?
A composite of metal and non metal ions
What is biomaterial ?
an object made from non-living material that is inserted into the body where it is intended to remain for a significant period of time in order to preform a specific function
What is biocompatible?
Will preform despite an appropriate host response
What is bionert?
elicits no host response
What is a screw?
A device that converts a torsional force into a linear force
What is a plate?
A load bearing device that is generally fix with a screw
What is an ex-fix?
A structure consisting of multiple skeletal fixation devices stabilised by external rods
What is corrosion?
electrochemical wear
What is fatigue?
Progressive failure due to application of cyclical stresses below the ultimate tensile strength
What is wear?
The physical process of removal of the surface of a material
What is sterilise?
Complete destruction or removal of all viable micro-organisms including spores and viruses
What is disinfect?
Reduce the number of viable micro-organisms but may not inactivate spores or viruses
What is clean?
A physical process which removes contamination but does not necessarily destroys micro -organisms
What is a prosthesis?
An externally applied device that replaces a missing limb or body segment
what is an orthosis?
An externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system
what is a tumour?
An abnormal mass of tissue, the growth of which exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal tissue and persists in the same excessive manner after the initiating stimulus has ceased
What is spinal stenosis?
A condition in which narrowing of the spinal canal produces compression of the neural elements as they exit the neural foramen
What is spondolithesis?
A condition in which there is a forward translation of one vertebra on another
