Definitions Flashcards
Enzymes
Substance formed by living cells that act as a catalyst in bodily chemical reactions (eg. Lipase → enzymes typically end in -ase)
Lipid
Organic compound composed of C, H, O2 (eg. fats, cholesterol)
Minerals
Inorganic compounds found in nature; in nutrition, a mineral is usually referred to by the name of the metal, non-metal, or phosphate rather than by the name of the compound (eg. zinc, carbon, lead)
Drugs
Substance taken by mouth, intramuscular injection, skin, blood, cavity, or applied topically (eg. narcotic substances)
*Usually tested for in a red tube
Vitamins
Organic compounds required by the body in minute amounts for physiological maintenance and growth (eg. vit A, B, C, etc)
Carbohydrates
Organic compound composed of C, H, O2 which includes sugars, starches, and cellulose
Electrolyte
Substance that breaks down into ions when in a solution and is capable of conducting an electrical current (eg. Na, K, Cl)
→ because ions are charged particles, all salts are electrolytes (able to conduct electrical current in solution)
