Definitions Flashcards
Partial Molar Volume
In general, the partial molar volume of a substance X in a mixture is the change in volume per mole of X added to the mixture.
Molar Volume
The volume occupied by one mole of a substance at a given T and P
Specific Volume
Volume occupied by 1kg of substance (given T and P?
Adiabatic
A process where there is no transfer of heat between a system and its surroundings
isobaric
constant pressure
closed system
no mass transfer between the system and surroundings
triple point
the temperature and pressure where gas, liquid and solid can coexist in equilibrium with eachother
allotropy
the existence of a chemical element in 2 or more forms with different arrangements of atoms
critical point of pure fluid
the temperature above which the fluid is supercritical and the liquid and its vapour can coexist
bubble point temperature
the temperature at which the first bubbles of gas evolve from the liquid
Specific heat capacity at constant pressure
the heat required to increase the temperature of 1 mol of a substance by 1 K under isobaric conditions
Vapour pressure
the pressure exerted by a vapour in thermodynamic equilibrium with its condensed phases at a given T in a closed system
Partial pressure
the pressure that a gas in a mixture of gases would exert if it occupied the same volume as the mixture at the same temperature
bubble point pressure
the pressure at which the first bubbles of gas evolve from the liquid
open system
a system that can freely exchange mass and energy across its surroundings
