Definitions Flashcards
Osmotic pressure
The pressure that would have to be applied to a pure solvent to prevent it from passing into a given solution by osmosis, often used to express the concentration of the solution.
Osmolarity
The concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solute particles per litre. mOsmol/L (physiological)
Osmolality
The concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solutes particles per Kg. mOsmol/kg
Tonicity
Volume change of a cell HOW a solution effects cell volume if cell is placed in solution NO UNITS Always relative to the cell Depends on non-permeable solutes
Principle of electrical neutrality
A small change in the number of ions creates a large potential difference across the membrane, but does not affect the bulk ion concentration of ions.
Gene
Smallest region of DNA that encodes a polypeptide OR is transcribed (tRNA)
Smallest part of a gene that has an end product
Locus
Location of a gene on a chromosome; often refers to a group of related genes
Allele
Alternative form of a gene
Wild type organism
Carries standard/reference gene which is usually, but not always functional
Mutant organism
Carries altered form of a gene
Genotype
Genetic/allelic form of a gene
Phenotype
Observable properties of the strain
Antigen
Any molecule that is specifically recognised by either T-cell receptors or antibodies
Epitope
The site on an antigen that directly binds to an antibody or the TCR
