Lentic
Lotic
Lentic : Standing water body with no flow - Example a lake or pond
Lotic : Flowing water bodies - Example a river or spring
Drainage System Definitions :
Exorheic
Endoheic
Arheic
Exorheic : Drains to the sea
Endoheic : Drains inland
Arheic : No defined drainage system
Photic Zone
Area which light can penetratie into the water
D.O.C
Dissolved Organic Carbon
T.D.S
Total Dissolved Solids
T.S.S
Total Suspended Solids
Autotroph/Autotrophic
The producers in the system - producing carbon and oxygen
Heterotroph/Heterotrophic
The consumers in the system - consume the carbon and oxygen
Allochthonous Carbon Source
Carbon sourced from outside the system usually from terrestrial fringing vegetation/riparian zone
Autochthonous
Carbon sourced from in the system usually from alage, macrophytes
Stratification
When layers form in the water column due to temperature differnces
Epilimion
The warmer layer within water column during stratification. This layer is less dense, recieves more light, high oxygen but low nutrients
Hypolimnion
The cooler layer within water column during stratification. Denser, low light, low oxygen and high nutrients
Amictic Lakes
Lakes that never mix
Holomicitc Laked
Will mix once per year
Litorial Zone
Near shore zone with full light penetration allowing plants to grow
Pelagic Zone
Deep open waters usually in the middle of the system
Euphotic Zone
Areas where light reaches and primary production occurs
Profundral Zone
Area where light doesn not reach usually the bottom of the system, harsh conditions
Lake Nutrient Status :
- Oligotrophic
- Mesotrophic
- Eutrophic
Oligotrophic : Low nutrients limited - high productivity
Mesotrophic : Intermediate nutrients - high productivity
Eutrophic : High nutrients - phytoplankton/algae outbreaks
5 Estuarine Organism Types
- Oligohaline : Freshwater species, very intolerant of salt
- True Estuarine : Species with wide tolerances
- Euyrhaline : Species that require 18ppk of salt
- Stenohaline : Species that require 25ppk of salt
- Migrants : Species that have life cycles within estuaries
Riparian Zone
The areas between the terrestrial zone and aquatic zone (an ectone)
Pulse Disturbance
Short-term, with severe intensity increases. Example - flood
Press Disturbance
Long term with constant intensity. Example - urbanization
Ramp Disutrbance
Long term events that have an increasing intesnity
Point Source Disturbance
Direct, continuous or intermittent
Non-Point Source Disturbance
In-direct effects
Indicator
A measurable feature in the ecosystem which indicates towards current ecological health
Reference Condition
A “pristine site” used to compare against
Synthetic Reference Condition
A reference condition that has be synthesised from models, data from other sites, and historical record
