Bactericidal
an antimicrobial that kills bacteria
Bacteriostatic
an antimicrobial that inhibits bacterial growth
Sensitive
when an organism is killed/inhibited by antimicrobials present at the site of infection
Resistant
when an organism is not killed/inhibited by antimicrobials present at the site of infection
MIC
Minimal inhibitory concentration - minimum concentration requires to inhibit the visible growth of a bacteium
MBC
Minimal bactericidal concentration - minimum concentration required to kill a bacterium
Topical
applied to the surface (skin/mucous membranes)
Systemic
Taken internally (orally/parenterally)
Parenteral
intra-venous/intra-muscular administration, occasionally subcutaneously
