A feature of, or situated in a town or city.
Rural
Countryside, farms
Settlement
A place where people live
Site
The land that the settlement is BUILT ON
Situation
Description of the land AROUND the settlement.
Functions
What the settlement does. Eg. providing education, manufacturing, transport, business, housing/residential areas and entertainment
Form
The shape of an urban area and the pattern found in it
Hinterland
The area of consumer attraction. ie. area the store generally serves
Market Threshold
The number of population or income needed to sustain the selling of a particular good or service
Range of a good
How far people travel to obtain a good
Low order goods
Everyday goods people get regularly. Eg. bread, milk, etc.
High order goods
Expensive items that people get rarely. Eg. cars, washing machines etc.
Meander
The bends of a river
Channel/strait
A body of water between two islands
Melaka
River between Malaysia and Indonesia
Thames
River in London
Siene
River in Paris
Megalopolis
Several big cities growing in to each other (mega: big, polis: city in Greek)
Reclaimed Land
Land which was once underwater but has been levelled out to increase the amount of land area
CBD
Central Business District
Secondary Business District
Smaller commercial/financial concentrations which were previously separate towns. Eg. Takapuna, Mt Wellington etc.
