What is map used for?
Map uses symbols and colours to represent the features of an area.
What are distortions?
Inaccuracies that result when information is twisted or pulled out of it’s original shape.
What is large scale map?
Shows a large amount of detail of a small area.
Scale of 1:50 000 or 1:25 000 or less.
Residential planning, hiking, military purposes.
What is small scale map?
Shows a small amount of detail of a large area.
Scale of 1:250 000 or 1:500 000 or more.
Political, physical, and economic information.
General Purpose Maps
Provides many types of information on one map. Most Atlas, wall or road maps fall into this category.
Thematic Maps
Give very specific information about a place.
Topographic maps?
Use symbols to show a variety of features.
What are contours?
Contours are lines on a map that join places of the same elevation above sea level.
What is the definition of Map?
A map is a representative of the earth’s features drawn on a flat surface.
