Utilitarianism
An ethical theory stating that the best decision is one that brings about the greatest good for most people. (Ex: Forgo Medicare funding treatments for pt >90 yr of age with a dx of Alzheimer and redistribute the funfding to other Medicare eligible individuals with a greater likelihood of benefit)
Deontology
An ethical theory that assumes that humans are rational and act out of principles that are consistent and objective and compel them to do what is right. (Ex: decision to resuscitate and ventilate a 23 week fetus, despite being able to pay for the care)
Beneficence
An ethical principle that one should do good and prevent or avoid doing harm.
Nonmaleficence
An ethical principle stating the duty not to inflict harm.
Autonomy
Personal freedom and the right to make choices.
Veracity
Tell the truth
