Definitions Flashcards
Atomic theory of matter
The idea that all matter is a collection of atoms.
Atom
The smallest chunk of a pure chemical element they has chemical properties of that element.
Properties of solids
Molecules touching each other, organized in patterns.
High density, resists compression or expansion.
Properties of liquids
Molecules touching each other, disorganized.
High density, resists compression or expansion.
Properties of gas
Molecules are disorganized and fall apart.
Low density, easily compressed or expanded.
Shape is easy to change/flows.
Isoelectronic
Atoms, cations, and anions that have the same number of electrons.
Isotope
A sample of an element with atoms that have the same number of neutrons as protons.
Carbon-14, symbol has left superscript
Oxoanion
A polyatomic anion made from one central atom that is chemically bonded to oxygen atoms.
Spectroscopy
The study of characteristic patterns of absorption if electromagnetic radiation, used to identify substances and provide information about the structure of their molecules.
Chromatography
The science of separation of compounds from complex mixtures.
Chemotherapy
The use in medicine of substances that are selectively toxic to malignant cells or disease causing viruses or bacteria.
Porphyrins
A class of large cyclic molecules fundamentally important to the function of living systems. (eg. green chlorophyll, red hemoglobin)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
The use of light in medical treatment.
Photosensitizers
Substances whose electrons can be excited by absorbing light of appropriate wavelength.
Lipoproteins
Molecules that are a combination of proteins and fats responsible for transporting fats through blood.
