Definitions Flashcards
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity with time.
Velocity
The rate or change of displacement with time.
Impulse
Is the rate of change of momentum due to the resultant external force with time.
Work
Where an object under a constant force F, undergoes a displacement r, then the work done on the object by the force is the scalar product of the force with displacement. W=FR=FRcos(θ)
Energy
The energy of a system is defined as it’s capacity to do work.
Work Energy Theorem
The work done by the resultant external force on a particle equals the particle’s change in kinetic energy.
Conservative Force
A conservative force, has an associated potential energy.
Collision
The particles exert a force on one another according to Newton’s third law. The force(s) exist only for a finite time, ie the collision has a beginning and an end. Particles do not need to touch.
