definitions Flashcards
what is the definition of isotope
atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses
what is the definition of relative atomic mass
the weighted mean mass of all the isotopes of an element compared with 1/12 mass of carbon 12
what is the definition of relative isotopic mass
the mass of a particular isotope of an element compared with 1/12 mass of carbon 12
what is the definition of a molecule
a group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
whats the difference between relative formula mass and relative molecular mass
relative molecular mass can only be used with molecules eg h20= 2 hydrogen and one oxygen so (2x1)+16=18 but would work with ionic substances eg NaCl
whereas relative formula mass works with everything as it just uses the formula eg H20 and Nacl
just use relative formula mass for everything
what is the definition of relative formula mass (Mr)
the weighted mean mass of a formula unit compared with 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon 12
what is a mole
it is the unit of measure of an amount of a substance (NUMBER OF ATOMS IN THE SUBSTANCE)
one mole is 6.02x10^23 atoms (avogadros constant)
what is Avogadro’s constant
the number of particles/atoms in a mole of a substance
which is 6.02x10^23
what is the definition for ionization energy
the amount of energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous atom
what is definition of atomic orbital
a region around the nucleus where an electron is most likely to exist and can hold up to two electrons of opposite spin
what is a sub-shell
a group name for all of the same type of orbitals in the same shell
eg 2p subshell consists of 3 2p orbitals
what is the definition of covalent bonds
attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
What is ionic bonding
the electrostatic attraction between positive ions and negative ions.
it holds together cations (positive ions) and anions (negative electrons) in an ionic compound
what is the definition for metallic bonding
the strong electrostatic attraction between cations (positive ions) and delocalised electrons
