Definitions Flashcards
Define element
Elements are the simplest substances which are made up of one type of atom
Define compound
Made up of two or more different elements chemically bonded together
If 2 or more elements are chemically joined, what will the suffix of compound name end in?

What does the mass number tell you?
The number or protons and neutrons
What does the atomic number tell you?
The number or protons
Define isotope
Isotopes are atoms of the same elements but with different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus
Isotopes have the same number of electrons and protons (same atomic number)
Isotopes have different amounts of neutrons (mass number)
Define relative atomic mass
The relative atomic mass of an element is the average mass of atoms of that element, taking into account the mass and percentage abundance of each of its isotope
What does the group number tell you?
Number of e- on the outer shell
What does the period number tell you?
Number of e- shell
What is ‘halogens displacements’?
Most reactive halogen displaces less reactive halogen from its salt
What does inert mean?
Unreactive
Define pure
