Social control
Processes that ensure people follow the norms laws and values of a society-formally and informally enforced-by the media and justice system-prevents deviance and creates social order
Formal agents of social order
Police, courts and justice system-provide negative sanctions for those who go against social order-detters people from commiting crime and maintains social stability
Crime
Newburn-Crime is a label attatched to a behaviour prohibited by the law-e.g doing drugs, theft, stealing etc
Deviance
Behaviour that goes against social norms and values and is socially unacceptable-e.g, murder
Why can crime and deviance be seen as social constructs
-What is seen as a crime changes throughout societies, e.g cannabis is a crime and deviant in signapore but legal in California-Crime and deviance is defined by society
-Plummer-Situational deviance-wether something is considered deviant or not depends on those judging it, the context etc- e.g some people may see smoking cannabis as deviant and some as not
-What is seen as crime and deviance changes over time-e.g homosexuality used to be seen as criminal and deviant but is now socially accepted.
