Definitions Flashcards
Resultant force
The single vector which has the same effect as the original vector acting together
Gravitational force
The gravitational force the earth exerts on any object on or near its surface
Frictional force
The force that opposes the motion of an object and acts parallel to the surface with which the object is in contact
Tensional force
The force that acts through a rope
Normal force
The perpendicular force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it
Thrust
Force exerted by an engine
Compression force
The force that acts through a solid rod
Inertia
An objects resistance to change in its state of rest or uniform motion
Gravitational acceleration
The acceleration of an object in free fall within a vacuum
Weight
The gravitational force the earth exerts on any object on or near its surface
Mass of an object
The amount of matter in a substance
Newton’s third law
When object A exerts a force on object B, object B simultaneously exerts an oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on object
Newton’s first law of motion
An object continues in its state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted upon by a net or resultant force
Newton’s second law of motion
When a resultant force is applied to an object of mass m , it accelerates in the direction of the resultant force. Acceleration is directly proportional to the resultant force and inversely proportional to the mass
