Definitions Flashcards
Allele
One of for more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Somatic cells
Any cell of a living organism other than the reproductive cells
Genome
The haploid set of chromosomes in a gamete or microorganism, or in each cell of a multicellular organism.
The complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism.
Autosome
Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome
Gamete
Reproductive cell of an animal or plant. Female gametes are eggs and male gametes are sperm. Eggs and sperm are haploid and carry one copy of each chromosome.
Germ cell
A reproductive cell of the body. Germ cells I are used to produce human reproductive sex cells call gametes.
Genotype
Genetic make-up of an organism
Phenotype
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Dominant
An allele, agent, or a trait that is expressed and masks the effect of the recessive allele, gene, or trait present.
Recessive
The trait masked by the dominant one.
Locus/loci
The physical site or location of a specific gene on a chromosome.
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Heterozygous
Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes
Carrier
A person who can pass an inherited (genetic) disease on to their children but who does not have the disease.
Monohybrid cross
The offspring of two individuals that differ in respect of a single gene.
Hybrid
The offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties, such as a mule.
Meiosis
A single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half of the original amount of genetic information.
Mitosis
Cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
Simple inheritance
The inheritance of traits controlled by a single gene with two alleles, one of which may be completely dominant to the other.
Polygenic inheritance
The inheritance of a trait governed by more than one gene.
Sex-linked inheritance
Inherited through one of the sex chromosomes, which are the X and Y chromosomes.
Autosomal recessive disease
When someone inherits two changed genes (mutations), one from each parent. Usually passed on by two carriers.
Autosomal dominant disease
If you get the abnormal gene from only one parent, you can still get the disease.
Hypoxia
An absence of enough oxygen in the tissues to sustain bodily functions
