Hierarchy
A way of ordering people into groups, with the most important ones at the top, (King, nobles, knights, peasants).
Vassals
A person who offered their loyalty and service to a lord in return for his protection and the granting of a fief.
Serfs
A medieval peasant who worked in the manor of a feudal lord.
Holy Land
The territory of today’s Middle East.
Fiefs
Usually a plot of land granted to a vassal by a lord in return for the vassal’s loyal support.
Magna Carta
A document signed in 1215 by England’s King John and his barons.
Crusade
A series of wars fought by Christians and Muslims between 1046 and 1291CE over control of the Holy Land.
Pandemic
A term used to describe the spread of infectious disease across a large expanse
Islam
The religion of the Muslims.
Barbarians
A term used by ancient Romans to describe someone living outside their borders.
Emperor
Someone who rules an empire.
Excommunication
A religious punishment that included cutting someone off from being part of the Christian community.
Pilgrimage
A journey made by someone who travels to a place of religious significance for prayers answered or sins forgiven.
Gothic Style
Architecture: pointed arches, large windows, tall spires, stained glass windows.
Illuminated Manuscript
Ornate works of art, highly decorated illustrations with gold and silver.
