definition for abnormality: statistical infrquency Flashcards
what is statistical infrequency?
behaviours which is uncommon/ rare is abnormal
if we plotted the behaviour on a normal distribution curve the statistically infrequent behaviours would occur at the top or bottom 2%
what are the real life applications of this definition of abnormality?
able to identify undesirable and rare behaviours such as intelectual disability disorder
which is identified by an IQ score that is 3 or more standard deviations lower than the average IQ score
advantage : statistical infrequency uses objective, standard deviations to define abnormal behaviour
this means that this definition of abnormality doesnt rely on subjective opinions about what is normal/ abnormal
this is an advantage as it reduces the likelihood of professionals making decisions based on personal bias or stereotypes
advantage : practical application- ensures children are developing as expected
statistical infrequency can be used to predict normal/expected development in children
this means that if a child has development that is different from being normal and what is expected they can be tested for abnormality
this is an advantage as it can highlight problems with speech and motor skills that can then be treated , the sooner the diagnosis the sooner the treatment can be given
advantage: statistical infrequency uses data from standardised tests such as IQ tests
as the definition is based on standardised tests it in scientifically credible
this means that its objective as it is measuring data that can not be faked
this suggests that statistical infrequency is a valid way of determining abnormality
disadvantage of statistical infrequency : cultural differences
the definition doesnt account for cultural differences
this means that any cultural differences about social norms or mental health are ignored
e.g in some religions it is not considered abnormal to hear voices or spirits even though it is infrequent behaviour
this is a limitation because important cultural differences are being overlooked and complex social behaviours are being simplified and reduced
disadvantage: some rare behaviours are desirable
the definition assumes that any rare behaviour is problematic which isnt true
e.g albert einstein had an abnormal IQ in the top 2% although it was rare it can be desirable
disadvantage : statistical infrequency ignores those who have common maldaptive behaviours
e.g anxiety and depression are commonly occuring
this is a limitation as these conditions still require support however they wouldnt be considered abnormal as they are common
counter argument to statistical infrequency not accounting for cultural differences
there are some behaviours that seem to be culturally universal such as stereotypical gender traits
what are the 4 explanations of abnormality?
deviation from social norms
deviation from ideal mental health
statistical infrequency
failure to function adeuqately
