Definition Flashcards
AC amplifier
Alternating current amplifier. an amplifier designed to process fast signal frequencies
Abnormal movement
A measure of respiratory effort reflecting movement of the diaphragm
AC signal
Alternating current signal. these are relatively fast signal frequencies such as EEG waves. can be either positive or negative signals
Active sleep
A stage of sleep in infants synonymous with REM sleep in adults
Advanced sleep phase syndrome (ASPS)
A circadian rhythm disorder in which the phases of the daily sleep/wake cycle are advanced with respect to clock time
Alpha - Delta sleep
Alpha waves occurring in Delta sleep
Alpha intrusion
The appearance of Alpha activity during sleep
Alpha rhythm
EEG waveform activity in the 8-13Hz range, seen predominantly in the occipital regions of the brain
Alpha wave
And EEG waveform, Seen most often during relaxed wake time while eyes are closed. The frequency of Alpha waves is 8-13Hz
Ambulatory monitor
Portable system used record physiological data during sleep
Amplifier
An electric instrument designed to increase the voltage of an incoming signal
Amplitude
The voltage of a wave
Anterior Tibialis EMG
A recording of the muscle activity from the outer muscle of the shinbone
Apnea
Lack of air flow for at least 10 seconds during sleep. Apnea this may be central or obstructive
Apnea index (AI)
A measure of the severity of sleep apnea
Apnea/hypopnea index
The number of hypopneas and apneas per hours of sleep
Arousal
an interruption of sleep continually in which there is a shift in the EEG frequency
Artifact
Any unwanted signal recorded within a sleep parameter
Attenuation
Decreased amplitude of a wave
Auto adjusting continuous positive airway pressure device
A type of CPAP machine that monitors changes in breathing and compensates automatically by appropriate adjustments in pressure
Automatism
Automatic action. An action performed without intention or awareness
Adaptive servo-ventilation
A new treatment for central sleep apneas, mixed apnea, Cheyne-stokes and complex sleep apneas
Atomic
Without normal muscle tone
Basic sleep cycle
Progression through sleep stages. For normal adult, the first cycle begins by going from wakefulness to NREM sleep. The first REM period follows the first period of NREM sleep, and the two sleep states continue to alternate throughout the night with an average period of about 90 minutes. A night of normal human sleep usually consists of 4-6 NREM/REM sleep cycles
Benzodiazepines
Developed in the 1950’s, a class of compounds the tranquilizes and sedated
Beta activity
EEG waveform with a frequency of greater than 13Hz
Beta rhythm
An EEG waveform of 13Hz or more. Beta rhythm is usually associated with drug use or anxiety
Bio-calibrations
Also known as physiologic calibrations. A sequence of actions by the patient that verifies that the sleep equipment is working properly
Bio-electrical potentials
Electrical voltages originating from a living source
