Defining Terms Flashcards
Medical Regulating:
Reference: ATP 4-02.2, 6-1
- designed to ensure the efficient and safe movement of patients.
- It is a system that entails:
- identifying the patients waiting evacuation
- locating the available beds
- coordinating the transportation means for movement
Casualty Collection Point (CCP):
Reference: ATP 4-02.2, 1-19
A location that may or may not be staffed, where casualties are assembled for evacuation to a medical treatment facility.
Ambulance Exchange Point (AXP):
- A location where a patient is transferred from one ambulance to another en-route to a MTF
- This may be an established point in an ambulance shuttle or it may be designated independently. Also called AXP.
CCP’s are normally predesignated….

CCP’s facilitate acquisition of casualties by ….

When used by the BAS, CCPs help
ATP 4-02.2, 1-19
- preserve BAS mobility
- preclude carrying casualties forward
- reduce EVAC time to the sustainment area
Why does medical planning need to be done with the overall operation plan in mind, using the higher headquarter’s OPORD?
- Medical units will not decide where to place CCPs for their supported units, but they do need to know where they are located for MEDEVAC purposes.
- Medical commanders and staff must work together with operational commanders to ensure a shared understanding of CCP placement locations.
Ambulance Exchange Point (AXP):
Reference: ATP 4-02.2, 1-21
- A location where a patient is transferred from one ambulance to another en-route to a medical treatment facility.

HSS appendix to the sustainment annex to the operation plan (OPLAN).
In the forward area, the threat of enemy ground activities, large concentrations of lethal weapons systems, and effective use of antiaircraft weapons may dictate…

- that the AXP be a predetermined rendezvous point for the rapid transfer of patients from one evacuation platform to another.
- The location of AXPs should be frequently changed to preclude attracting enemy fires.
Ambulance exchange points are established for many different reasons.
- A (BSB) possesing a mixture of wheeled and tracked ambulances, AXPs could be established for the following reasons….
Reference 4-02.2, 1-23
- The brigade’s tracked ambulances ato keep up with maneuver elements, which carry the patients from the BAS to an AXP where the brigade wheeled ambulances for relatively longer trip to the rear.
Ambulance exchange points are established for many different reasons.
- Air defense artillery capability is such that air ambulances cannot fly asfar forward as the BASs. However, an AXP could be established…..

- a few kilometers to the rear, stillwell forward of the brigade support area, tracked or wheeled ambulances could then transfer the patients to the air assets, facilitating rapid evacuation of patients
By using AXPs, evacuation assets are:
Reference: 4-02.2, 1-24
- returned to their supporting positions faster
- returning crews are familiar with the road network and the supported unit’s tactical situation.
- In the case of air ambulance assets, AXPs are important
- for integration into the airspace control system at each role
- enhancement to survivability provided by current threat and friendly air defense information.
