A mental state that involves thoughts, feelings, and behaviours which are assoiated with impairment in daily life, personal distress, atypical thoughts, feelings and behaviours and dysfunction
Defining mental health
Define biopsychosocial framework
Is an approach to describing and explaining how biological, psychological and social factors combine and interact to influence a person’s level of physical and mental health.
Defining mental health
biopsychosocial framework
-Biological
(internal factors) are physiological influences related to bodily functions often not in our control eg weight
Defining mental health
biopsychosocial framework
-Psychological
(internal factors) are influenced linked to mental and cognitive processes eg self-esteem level
Defining mental health
biopsychosocial framework
-Social
(external factors) are influences related to how we interact with others and the society in which we live eg social support.
Defining mental health

- Act independently and fulfil any tasks that they need to
- Have positive impacts in other areas too; higher participation in extra-curricular activities, more domain of social support, regulate their emotions, think clearly rationally etc

- Resilience is the ability to cope with adapt to life stressors and consequently restore positive mental functioning,
- Resilience can be shown through adjusting to the stressor (accept it) or through overcoming the stressor (addressing and fixing issue)
- People who show resilience tend to be more content, higher self-efficacy, optimistic etc (protective factors)
Defining mental health
Define Protective factors
prevents people from developing serious mental health problem or even mental disorder
Defining mental health
Informed consent
Main concern
people may have mental disorders that make it difficult for them to provide informed consent as they do not understand all elements of the study ie decline in cognitive functioning
guardians etc can provide consent on the patients behalf but it is no way acceptable to pressure patients to take part.
Defining mental health
Use of placebo treatment
Define placebo treatments
Refer to treatments that do not actually contain an active drug component within them
Defining mental health
Use of placebo treatment
Define placebo effect
Is when participants believe they have been given the treatment and respond/ behave differently to match their expectations
Defining mental health
Use of placebo treatment
Issue with using placebo treatment
Sometimes patients have to stop taking their active medication ti take placebo instead. This can be dangerous and cause symptoms to re appear or mental health condition to worsen
