Definations Flashcards
Homozygous
When 2 alleys for a characteristic are the same.
Heterozygous
When 2 alleys for a characteristic are different.
Gamete
A male/female reproductive cell.
Dominant
Needs only one allele to show in the phenotype
Recessive
Need both to show the phenotype.
Asexual Reproduction
A form of reproduction that results in a genetic copy.
Sexual Reproduction
Sexual Reproduction results in a genetic mix.
Mutation
Point/substitution = Where the nucleotide is substituted for another. This can have little to no affect Insertion = This can a more serious impact. It involves an extra letter being added which alters the triplet groups. Deletion = This is similar to an insertion mutation but a letter has been deleted instead.
Genotype
The genetic constitution of an individual organism (set of genes responsible for physical traits).
Phenotype
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Chromosome
A thread-like structure acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information
Amino Acids
The building blocks of proteins
Gene
A section of DNA containing instructions for joining amino acids.
Protein
A natural polymer, which can be structural (such as a collagen) or functional (such as an enzyme)
Eukaryotic cell
A cell with its genetic information stored in the nucleus
