Deffinisions Flashcards
Mitochondria
Produces all the energy a cell needs to carry out its function
Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid where organelles are found
Lysosomes
Uses chemicals to break down, cell parts that are worn out, foreign substances ( bacteria) and waste material using digestive enzymes
Vacuoles
Stores food, water, waste and other materials that the cell needs
Golgi bodies
Receives proteins and materials from the ER, packages them and then distributes them
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Has passage ways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to the other
Smooth ER
A network of connecting to tubes with a cell appearance smooth because it has no ribosomes.
It’s function has to synthesise lipids, metabolised carbohydrates and phospholipids
Rough ER
Appears to be flattened with interconnected sacs that appear rough due to the ribosomes on the outer surface.
Its function is to produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function on .
Lipids
Lipids are fatty, waxy, or oily compounds that are so soluble in organic solvent and insoluble and polar solvent such as water.
The function is to be a part of your cell membrane that helps control what goes in and out of your cells.
Enzymes
A protein molecule that acts as a biological catalyst.
Its function is to help speed up metabolism, or the chemical reactions in our body.
Chloroplasts
Catches energy from the sunlight and use it to produce food in a plant cell
Nucleus
Contains DNA
Nucleolus
Found inside the nucleus and provides ribosomes
Chromatin
Tiny strands inside the nucleus that contains the instructions for the cells functions
