What is deviation from social norms?
This refers to an individuals inability to conform to the social norms which are unwritten rules in society.

If a person deviates from the criteria of jahodas ideal mental the more they are missing the more they are viewed as being mentally unwell.

What is failure to function adequately?
This refers to an individuals inability to cope with the everyday tasks, it may limit their work and social life
What is statistical infrequency?
This refers to individuals who statistical frequency on a normal distribution, which may be on either ends of the extreme.

1.allows other to distinguish clearly between what is and isn’t abnormal
2.lacks temporal validity as Norms vary across time. They also vary across cultures meaning they may lack reliability

1.allows patients to set clear goals
2.overly demanding as not everyone is able to meet all criteria at all time which would mean that everyone is abnormal & difficult to measure all criteria objectively

1.involves behaviours that are easy to observe,measure and treat
2.not all people with mental disorders are unable to cope with everyday life such as psychopaths

- Practical and doctors are easily able to identify abnormality.
2.objective as relied less on the doctors subjective interpretation
3.some mental disorders aren’t infrequent such as depression and not all statistical infrequencies are undesirable such as a high IQ
