Defense mechanisms Flashcards
Repression
Push socially unacceptable thoughts, feelings or impulses into our unconscious.
Denial
Deny reality because they are unpleasant.
Projection
Blaming others.
Reaction formation
We use reaction formation to overcome impulses that are unacceptable to us, gaining mastery over the original impulse by exaggerating the opposing tendency.
Rationalisation
Conceal action and its true meaning.
Conversion reaction
Unacceptable thoughts or emotions are converted to physical symptoms, which are hysterical or psychosomatic.
Phobic avoidance
Avoid unpleasant places and situations.
Displacement
Fear of addressing our feelings directly to the person who provoked them, so it is deflected elsewhere.
Regression
Avoidance of anxiety by going to a previous simpler lifestyle.
Isolation
Dealing with i.e. grievance by removing the emotion attached to the relevant event.
