Repression
Repression is an unctuous mechanism employed by the ego to keep disturbing or threating thoughts from becoming conscious
example: Oedipus complex, aggressive thoughts about same sex parent are repressed.
Denial
Denial involves blocking external events fro, awareness. If a situation is too much to handle the person refuses to experience it.
example: smoker refuses to belive smoking cause cancer.
Projection
Attributing your own unacceptable thoughts, feelings and motives to another person.
example: you hate someone but your super ego tells you is unacceptable to hate someone, that you can “solve” the issue by believing the person hates you.
Displacement
Satisfying an impulse (e.g. aggression) with a substitute object.
example: someone who is frustrated with their boss might go home and kick the dog.
Regression
This is a movement back in psychological time when one is faced with stress.
example: A child may begin to suck their thumb again or wet the bed when they are under stress.
Sublimation
Satisfying an impulse (e.g. aggression) with a substitute object. In a socially acceptable way.
example: Sport is an example of putting our emotions into something contractive.
