To establish a prima facie case for defamation, must prove 4-6 elements

tending to adversely affect one’s reputation.
Defamatory language: what must opinions be based on to be actionable?
specific facts
Defamation: Of or concerning P element
reasonable person would understand that the statement referred to P (incl. w/in small group)
Defamation: publication element
someone other than P received and reasonably understood the defamatory matter due to D’s negligent or intentional publication (intent to publish, not to defame)
Defamation: damage to P’s reputation types
must be proved depending on type of defamation (libel or slander)

any communication that has some permanence (e.g., writing, radio, TV, photo)
