Deep Tendon/Superficial Reflexes Flashcards
Deep tendon reflexes are graded:
0 - Absent 1+ Hypoactive 2+ Normal 3+ Hyperactive 4+ Markedly hyperactive
Grades considered normal are:
1-3
0 & 4 are considered:
Abnormal
Two reinforcement techniques used are:
Waist up: Clench teeth
Waist down: Push hands together & squeeze
Deep tendon reflexes are:
Biceps Brachioradialis Triceps Patellar Achilles
To test biceps reflex, place the thumb:
Over the biceps tendon in antecubital space
To test achilles reflex have client seated with legs dangling & hold foot in
Slight dorsiflexion
When would we test for ankle clonus?
When other reflexes are hyperactive
Clonus is associated with:
Upper motor neuron lesions
When testing for ankle clonus, have the client supine, and…
Place hand under knee & raise leg horizontally. Briskly dorsiflex foot.
What would you see to suggest clonus?
Oscillation & Rapid contraction of the ankle or foot.
When testing plantar reflex, we stroke:
Lateral aspect of sole, from heel to ball curving inwards towards ball.
Toes should:
Flex
Dorsiflexion of great toe & extension of toes is:
Abnormal - Positive Babinski’s Response
Positive Babinski’s Response in adults suggests:
Upper motor neuron lesion, damage to corticospinal tract
