Deductive Argument Structure Flashcards
Major Premise
Rule or Standard (“Pizza is best when it is authentic”)
Minor Premise
Fact (“Pizza in napoli was originally baked in very hot wood ovens”)
Conclusion
Apply rule to facts (“Limestone is the best in Lawrence bc it is wood fired pizza”)
Formalism
An act is either right or wrong, Kant’s Categorical Imperative: act only in a way that you are willing to have everyone else act, in every situation
Consequentialism
End-result ethics (Utilitarianism), the rightness of an action is determined by reevaluating its consequences (a noble end result may justify use of any means)
Law vs Ethics
Law - rules enforced by the state, many are based in ethics & Ethics - broader set of values, not always enforced by the state
