decompressions Flashcards
what causes a slow decompression
a window or door seal leek or a fault in the pressurisation system (red cabin pressure light)
what are the symptoms of slow decompression
shortage of breath, palpitations and light headedness- if these are noticed the pilots must be informed
pilots will receive…
a audible and visual warning on the flight deck
indications of slow decompression in the cabin…
seat belt signs will illuminate, cabin lights set to brt, exit markers and emergency lights on
“attention crew at station” during slow decompression
cc must- interrupt their duty, stow away any catering supplies, return to stations and fasten harness, if oxygen masks deploy they must wear them, await further instruction
what will happen after a slow decompression
pilot will assess the situation and it will either be an alert call or “cabin crew normal operations”
what causes rapid decompression
a sudden loss of cabin pressure caused by explosion, cargo door failure and any structural damage to the plane
signs of rapid decompression in the cabin
a sudden metallic clang or boom, dense fogging, strong gust of air, dust and debris, drop of temp, oxygen masks deploy, seat belt signs illuminate, cabin lights set to brt, exit markers will illuminate and emergency pa made
what are the symptoms of rapid decompression
severe pain in ears, chest expansion, coldness faintness and sickness and difficulty speaking
immediate actions by cabin crew fit and sit!
put on a drop down oxygen mask, sit down out of the aisle and fasten a seatbelt or wedge yourself between passengers
what pa will the pilot make during rapid decompression
“this is the captain speaking we have lost cabin pressure and are descending to a lower altitude put your oxygen masks on and obey the rules”
what pa will the pilot make after rapid decompression
“the aircraft has levelled off at a safe altitude where pressuristation is not required there may be a burning smell from the oxygen system that is perfectly normal please remain seated”
what must crew do during the emergency descent while seated
monitor the pax- have an oxygen mask on, remain seated with seatbelt fastened
actions to be taken after aircraft has levelled off
“sccm to flight deck”- this is a signal they can move but they must use a portable oxygen bottle and the other ccm will guard the door, commander will require any information on pax or crew injured or missing, a nits brief then brief the rest of the crew
priorities for assisting passengers- toilets
check to ensure no one is unconscious behind the doors
