Bon

Dalai Lama
The highest ranking spiritual and political authority of Tibet.
Gelung
Tibetan Buddhist school founded by Tsongkhapa in the 14th Century.
Hinayana
With Mahayana, one of the two divisions of Buddhism. Hinayana teachings emphasize personal liberation from suffering.
Kagyu
A school of Tibetan Buddhism founded by Marpa the Translator in the 10th Century.
Mayahana
With Hinayana, one of the two divisions of Buddhism, emphasizing the attainment of complete enlightenment to save all sentient beings from suffering.
Nyingma
Oldests of the four Tibetan Buddhist schools, established in the 8th century and based on the teachings of Padmasambhava.
Rime
A nonsectarian movement started in 19th century, favouring the integration of all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Sakya
One of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, established in the 11th century.
Therevada
The only remaining school of Hinayana.
Vajyana
Literally, “Diamond Vehicle”, a Buddhist path practiced by Tibetan Buddhists, based on tantric texts.
Yana
Literally, “vehicle”. The three yanas are Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana.
