hunch
a feeling based on one’s intuition or for which there is no proof
e.g. Call it a hunch, but I think Love killed Natallie.
reel from something
feel very giddy, disoriented, or bewildered, typically as a result of an unexpected setback
e.g. I was reeling from the mortification of Enzo rejecting me while I’m waiting for Cecelia to finish her tap-dancing class.
mortify
cause someome to feel embarrassed, ashamed, or humiliated
e.g.I’m mortified that an editorial error was introduced into the copy.
raise eyebrow, put out hand, shakes pills into palm, throw back into mouth, swallow dry, kick in
She raises her eyebrows at me, then I put out my hand and she shakes two little red pills into my palm. I throw them back into my mouth and swallow them dry. I wonder how long it’ll take them to kick in.
pump someone for information about something
try to elicit information from someome by persistent questioning
e.g. She began to pump me for details.
strike out on someone’s own
to start doing something new, independently of other people
e.g. The Winchesters are paying me well, but not well enough to strike out on my own without at least a few more paychecks under my belt.
under one’s belt
- safely or satisfactorily achieved, experienced, or acquired
e.g. The Winchesters are paying me well, but not well enough to strike out on my own without at least a few more paychecks under my belt. - (of food or drink) consumed
e.g. Gus already had a large brandy under his belt
hang in there
- remain persistent and determined in difficult circumstances
e.g. I just have to hang in there a little longer.
euphemism
- a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunet when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing
e.g. “a little over the edge” That’s a nice euphemism for her outburst of anger yesterday.
blab
- reveal secrets by indiscreet talk
- a person who indiscreetly reveals secrets or who talks foolishly
e.g. She blabbed to the press.
