Palliative care
end-of-life care that attempts to meet the clients physical, spiritual, emotional and psychosocial needs.
Falls risks
older adults at increased risk due to decreased strength, impaired mobility and balance, and endurance limitations combined with decreased sensory perception
-other clients at increased risk include those with decreased visual acuity, generalized weakness, urinary frequency, gait and balance problems, and cognitive dysfunction; also side effects of some medications
-clients are at greater risk when >1 of the risk factors are present
Euthanasia
act of ending a person’s life to release them from an incurable disease or suffering. Active means to painlessly letting someone die; and passive means to prevent death from natural causes for merciful reasons.
ADLs-Activities of Daily Living:
Activities of daily living are activities related to personal care. They include bathing or showering, dressing, getting in and out of bed or a chair, walking, using the toilet, and eating.
The stage of grief where the client denies the reality of the situation. Serves several useful purposes. May occur at various times throughout an illness;fluctuation.
Denial
The obligation of a physician, or nurse to not harm the patient
Nonmalefience
The result of unexpected trauma such as losses, illness or displacement,
Situational crisis
An essential component of end-of-life care that involves the car given to a deceased client.
Postmortem
What ADLs should a nurse most likely focus on when assessing the nutritional status of an older client with a disability?
How do they buy their groceries, meal preparation, cleaning up after cooking.
What activities of daily living is gathering information when doing an assessment?
We want to look at eating habits, are they clean, toileting, are they dressed properly for the season
Physical signs of a client who is dying can include
Cold, not eating, hallucinating, shallow/labored breathing…
For a resident who only wants to play certain games…
Provide them with a different game and as long as it provides stimulation
A nurse is complaining of her own view of death, you should respond with…
“Get a grip with it”
