Study of drugs and their interaction with living things which encompasses the physical and chemical properties, biochemical and physiologic effects.
Pharmacology
Study of drugs in human for patients and healthy volunteer.
Clinical Pharmacology
The use of drugs to diagnose, prevent or treat disease. This is how we utilize medication to the patient.
Pharmacotherapeutics
Any chemical that can affect living processes.
Drug
Property of ideal drug that elicits the response for which it is given. it achieve specific goals.
Effectiveness
Property of ideal drug that is safe and cannot produce harmful effects even administered in very high doses and for a very long time.
Safety
Property of ideal drug that affect certain body system or certain cell.
Selectivity
An ethical consideration that protect research subjects from harm.
Beneficence
An ethical consideration that requires subjects to be treated as independent person capable of making decisions on their own best interests, right to self determination.
Respect for the person’s Autonomy
An ethical consideration that includes mutual sharing of information, expresses respect to persons, gains active involvement in care and respects the right to self determination.
Informed Consent
It describes the drug’s chemical structure.
Chemical Name
A drug that is official, nonproprietary name, not owned by any company and universally accepted.
Generic Name
A drug that is proprietary named and chosen by the drug company and registered as trademark.
Trade or Brand Name
It stands for pro re nata, which means “as needed” in latin phrase.
PRN
This is the preferred and expected effect for which the medication is administered to a specific client.
