What do you do first for the newborn after you have secured a patent airway?
You want to dry the baby off. They’re wet from the amniotic fluid, do this to keep them warm.
What’s the nurse’s priority action after the delivery of a cesarean delivery is.
Respiratory - ABCs. Check respiratory and patent airways.
How do you care for the umbilical cord stump?
Do not submerge in water until stump falls off - sponge bath only
What is caput succedaneum?
Happens with vaginal births, especially when vacuum is used. Localized swelling of the soft tissues of the scalp caused by pressure on the head during labor. Can be palpated as a soft edematous mass and CAN cross over the suture line.
What is cold stress?
Ineffective thermoregulation.
Can lead to hypoxia, acidosis, and hypoglycemia.
• If the baby becomes cold, they will burn brown fat to generate heat (which releases glucose) → hypoglycemia
How to prevent SIDS(Sudden infant death syndrome)?
Place child on back during sleep
• Use firm, tight-fitting mattress in crib
• No pillows, blankets, stuffed animals in crib
What is cephalhematoma?
Collection of blood between the periosteum and the skill bone it covers.
• Does NOT cross suture line
• Results from trauma during birth (pressure during prolonged birth, forceps)
What is Hepatitis B vaccine surface antigen?
If Mom is Hepatitis B + the baby gets hepatitis immunoglobulin and the hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth
What do you use to remove secretions from the newborn’s mouth?
Bulb syringe (Aspirate mouth first, 1” nostril, 2’’ nostril)
What do you need to understand about crib safety?
• No pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals in crib
• no toys, bumper pads or loose linens
• Use a firm, tight-fitting mattress in crib
What medications should the nurse give immediately following birth?
Vitamin K, hepatitis B vaccine, erythromycin vaccine
What do you do when a newborn is jittery, lethargic, diaphoretic?
Obtain glucose levels, perform heel stick
How do you release a newborn from the nursery?
ONLY Baby, mom, and partner have bracelets
APGAR score
Appearance(skin color), pulse(heart rate), grimace(reflex irritability), activity(tone), respiration.
How do you identify respiratory distress?
• Nasal flaring
• Grunting
• Gasping
• Labored breathing
• RR > 60
