Symptoms of placenta Previa
PAINLESS bright red vaginal bleeding
Refrain from what with placenta Previa
Refrain from vaginal exams - can exacerbate bleeding. Put on external fetal monitor to monitor mom and baby simultaneously. (Mom on bed rest)
Cervical insufficiency
Premature cervical dilation
Cervical insufficiency signs and symptoms
Pink stained discharge, urge to push
Magnesium sulfate
Used to treat eclampsia to treat seizures. Used to prevent preterm labor.(used prophylactically)
Magnesium sulfate toxicity
absence of reflexes (DTRs)
• Low urine output <30ml/1hr - report to provider and discontinue medication
• Bradypnea RR <12 BPM
• Have calcium gluconate present - the antidote
What do you give for magnesium sulfate toxicity
Calcium gluconate
Betamethasone is used for
Enhances fetal lung maturity & surfactant production
• Used for potential preterm labor
Betamethasone dosage
Two 12mg doses, given 24 hours apart -
Betamethasone side effects
Flushing, sweating, high BP
Understand what actions to implement on a 37-week gestation client with severe pre-eclampsia.
Dark room
• Have Mag sulfate order
• Have calcium gluconate ready
• Monitor vital signs closely
Understand the risk factors for placental abruption.
MOST COMMON RISK FACTOR = Maternal hypertension (chronic or gestational)
