Decision Making 1 & 2 Flashcards
What is veterinary public health?
The sum of all contributions to the complete physical, mental and social well-being of humans through an understanding and application of veterinary medical science
Define population
Group of individuals defined by a set of common characteristics and relevant to the question being asked
What is a physical population?
Can be defined by their location e.g. Dairy herd
What is a conceptual population?
Can be defined by other factors e.g. working dogs.
What is a decision?
A choice or judgement as to future action, reached after consideration
What are the elements of a decision model? (5)
1) Define the problem, 2) Define alternative solutions, 3) Define assessment criteria (economic, welfare), 4) Collect information and evaluate, 5) Select alternative and implement.
In the context of decision making, what is a risk?
Probability of an event, and the consequences of an event.
What is a hazard?
An agent, substance or action that has the potential to cause an undesired event
What is a zero-risk approach? Why is it not always possible? What should be done instead?
Zero risk is keeping risk out completely. Often not possible or undesirable as it would need too many resources. Instead try to determine a practical achievable control of risk.
What is a risk analysis?
Structured, transparent approach to deal with undesired events that might happen in the future
What are the three elements of a risk analysis?
Risk management, risk assessment, and risk communication.
What is a risk assessment? What does it include?
Includes estimation of risk from hazard e.g. probability of occurence of unwanted event, and the consequences of the event.
What does risk management involve?
You have a risk manager who makes the decisions.
What is risk communication?
The exchange of facts and opinions on risk between individuals and groups affected by risk and risk management.
What is a scenario analysis?
A systematic comparison of the outcomes of a series of events.
