Deciding on a research question Flashcards
1
Q
Dependent variable
A
The variable being measure in an experiment
2
Q
Independent variable
A
The variable which is being manipulated (changed) by the researcher to gather dependable results
3
Q
Non- directional hypothesis ‘two tailed’
A
- researcher is not clear what will happen
- not clear or precise
- e.g there will be a difference between girls and boys maths ability
4
Q
Directional hypothesis
A
- Researcher is confident enough to make a clear prediction
- more convincing compared to a non- directional hypotheses
5
Q
Null hypothesis
A
- Predicts that results will only happen by chance
- must be included in research because psychologists can never rule out the poss that it just happens by chance
6
Q
Aim
A
A reasonably precise idea about the area of study and what the study is going to try and achieve
7
Q
Operationalising variables
A
Making the variables measurable
8
Q
Alternative hypothesis (HA)
A
Hypothesis based on Non-experimental research
9
Q
Experimental hypothesis (H1)
A
Hypothesis based on experimental research
10
Q
confounding variable
A
only impacts few participants
11
Q
extraneous variable
A
impacts all participants
